Too Much Touch, Not Enough Play

Is it me, or are way too many players getting a bit too touchy in this year’s World Cup? Lately, I’m seeing just way too much grabbing, pulling, pushing, tripping, and elbowing! I thought these things weren’t allowed! Now, almost every team is doing it at some point. Why can’t they just play football? Stick to the sport! Rather than great footwork, so many players seem to be focused on yanking the shirts off their opponents, and there is more body checking in some of these matches than in a bloody hockey game!

Moreover, so many of these incidents go unnoticed and un-reprimanded by the refs! Then they dish out yellow cards for pure and obvious accidents. I just don’t get it. I think football should be about the sport, the footwork, the talent. Players should rely on their skills, not how well they can push or pull or punch someone else. What do you think? Express your thoughts with the poll below, and feel free to add comments!

I love the physical element of football — tackling, shoulder-to-shoulder battles in the middle of the pitch, crashing the goal on corner kicks, etc. — but I can’t stand chippyness, dirty play, or intimidation beyond the scope of the game. Having said that, it’s still been a lot of fun watching the cup this year. Now if only I could get a vuvuzela ring tone! 🙂

Right, it’s the petty stuff that gets a bit much. And a lot of what I’m seeing seems to be against the rules. And, you like the vuvuzela? Or was that sarcasm? Haha, I find it a bit much after a while; it’s constant!

Well said! I do think the refs need to be much more aware of the past, and most likely, future on-purpose incidents. And these vuvuzelas are getting pretty annoying! There are many other ways to show your appreciation and how you enjoy the game other than blowing load horns! Anyways, very well done Sarah, and i hope to be reading more of your blogs soon.
